Prison cells
A man has been sentenced to life imprisonment in the Madadeni Regional Court in KwaZulu-Natal for raping a neighbour’s child.
This after he was released from prison on parole where he was also serving a sentence for rape.
He raped the 14-year-old girl repeatedly between October 2022 and October 2023 when she came over to babysit his sister’s child.
Provincial National Prosecuting Authority Spokesperson in KwaZulu-Natal, Natasha Ramkissoon-Kara, says the man’s name has also been entered into the national sex offenders register.
“The Madadeni Regional Court sentenced the 42-year-old man to a term of life imprisonment for the rape on diverse occasions of a 14-year-old girl between October 2022 and October 2023. In addition to the life sentence, the man was declared unfit to possess a firearm and the court ordered that his name be entered into the national register for sex offenders.”
Process to make list public
The national register for sex offenders includes names of convicted sex offenders and is expected to be made accessible to the public without the need to apply.
Non-profit organisation, Save the Children South Africa, says it is optimistic about the public release as it offers a crucial step towards protecting children and communities from sexual offenders.
The organisation believes that publicising the registry will help communities better understand their neighbours and protect their children.
However, it has also cautioned that the register alone will not eradicate child sexual abuse as offenders often hide in plain sight.
