KZN Human Settlements visits flood victims


The KwaZulu-Natal Human Settlements Department says it will visit communities in the Umshwathi Municipality affected by heavy rainfall this morning

The rain has caused floods in which three people were swept away last night , houses and road infrastructure have also been destroyed.  

The department’s MEC Siboniso Duma says that they’ve sent the rescue team. 

“This morning, we are going back again with the team from the saps and all the disaster team. All the families were taken to the nearest schools yesterday. For now, we are told of three unaccounted people because the families were there while it was taking place and they were washed away.  At this point in time, according to the protocol we don’t say that we confirm death, we say they are unaccounted for.” 

The search is continuing for two more missing people, it has been confirmed that search and rescue teams have recovered the body of a woman who disappeared when a strong river current washed her away.
The heavy downpour has left scores homeless and severely damaged public infrastructure.
