Men sift through the rubble after floods in KZN.
The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) says it has systems in place to respond to any incidents following a weather warning of damaging winds in parts of the province.
The South African Weather Service issued the warning as a cold front moves across various regions in the country. KwaZulu-Natal has experienced severe weather events in recent years, including wildfires and snowstorms, which resulted in fatalities and the displacement of residents.
Department spokesperson Senzelwe Mzila says the province has learned from past incidents and is working closely with stakeholders.
“You remember that last year, in July, we were facing wildfires. In September, we faced a blizzard that had the N3, one of the most busiest routes in the country, closed down for a couple of days. So climate change is there, but I think the good thing that we’re seeing is that everything is committed to working closely with stakeholders to ensure that there is transparency, accountability, and that all stakeholders play an active role in ensuring that our communities are protected,” says Mzila.
He adds, “And that government resources are supplemented by resources that are available from the private sector and from our social partners.”
