The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Education has confirmed that all outstanding payments to service providers involved in the National School Nutrition Programme were processed successfully as of yesterday.
This follows a protest on Monday by service providers who demonstrated outside district offices, claiming they had not been paid for several months. The department has denied this, attributing the delays to technical issues.
Department spokesperson Mlu Mtshali explained that the delays were due to problems experienced during the rollout of a new financial system.
“Twenty percent of the payments that were due in April were not successful due to some technical difficulties with the payment system. This follows an upgrade which was meant to increase compliance with SCOWA. So we learnt that there was an interface issue and some of these payments had failed,” said Mtshali.
He confirmed that the issue has since been resolved.
“That error has been corrected and we are told that yesterday all the payments to service providers were done and those payments runs were successful,” he added.
