KZN acts to curb teen pregnancies after 26,000 cases reported in 2024

KwaZulu-Natal Premier Thami Ntuli has launched a multisectoral teenage pregnancy prevention strategy in the Ugu district.

Between April and December 2024, over 26,000 teenagers got pregnant in the province, with more than 1,200 girls being 14 years old and younger.

Twenty-five-year-old Sbahle Chiliza says she fell pregnant as a teenager.

“When I was pregnant, I was going to write matric the following year. So, it was hard to tell my mom everything as I was scared of what I would do with the baby. I also considered the termination, and I told my mother that I was not ready to look after the child, and she even advised me to terminate it. When we went to the doctor, the doctor said it was too late, and I decided otherwise that I am keeping it.”
