The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (CoGTA) says it has activated its disaster management teams to ensure a coordinated response as severe weather conditions are expected ahead of the Comrades Marathon on Sunday.

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a weather warning of extreme cold conditions with disruptive snowfall for most areas along the midlands of the province.

CoGTA MEC Reverend Thulasizwe Buthelezi says there are plans in place should there be any eventualities.

Buthelezi adds that they have activated the joint operations cluster comprising of law enforcement agencies, emergency services, municipalities and social partners.

“Our teams will be closely monitoring routes starting from today especially as runners on Sunday and spectators begin their journeys from Sunday evening after the conclusion of the race,” says Buthelezi.
