Members of the National Freedom Party during elective conference
The African National Congress (ANC) in KwaZulu-Natal says it has written to the National Freedom Party (NFP), requesting a bilateral meeting to discuss its decision to withdraw from the Government of Provincial Unity (GPU).
The NFP announced its withdrawal from the coalition government on Wednesday.
The party further instructed its sole representative, Mbali Shinga, to resign as MEC of Social Development.
This after Shinga defied party orders during the December vote of no confidence against Premier Thami Ntuli brought forth by the uMkhonto weSizwe Party (MK Party).
ANC’s provincial task team coordinator, Mike Mabuyakhulu says they are confident that the GPU will remain stable.
“The Government of Provincial Unity remains stable in a sense that the government can only change if we follow one of the scenarios which is section 141 subsection 2 of the constitution. The majority of the legislature members can only vote in support of a vote of no confidence to the premier or to the executive council, so we are simply saying with this current scenario, it is not possible that those who are not part of the GPU will be able to master 14 or more members. Our focus is to ensure that the government functions normally across all spheres.”
Meanwhile, Ntuli has declined to comment on the matter, citing that he has not been formally informed of the NFP’s decision to withdraw from the GPU.
“I cannot comment about the internal matters of the NFP. The side of the MEC who is the chairperson of the NFP is quite important. If then I have a comment from the leadership of the NFP in the province or rather herself on the issue of agreeing with that call, then I will be able to comment in a particular direction. I have not received any communication about the withdrawal of any MEC.”
