Aftermath of a veldfire
The Mayor of Kouga Municipality Hattingh Bornman says they are awaiting air support from George in the Western Cape, to help contain several fires burning in different parts of the municipality.
Five fires have been reported thus far.
Bornman says it has been challenging to secure helicopters, further complicating efforts to contain the fires.
An evacuation order has been issued for residents of Zwartenbosch along the R330 road due to the uncontrolled blazes.
Bornman cautioned residents against going in the vicinity of the fires, as direction keeps changing.
“Currently we’ve got five fires in our area, one on the R330, one between Humansdorp and Jeffreys Bay, one in St Francis and then two smaller ones in Humansdorp itself. So, it has flared up again, the fire of earlier in the week and then obviously a few new ones also started. I’ve spoken to some of my colleagues in the Western Cape and they’ve been fighting fires as well which is why we’ve been struggling to get helicopters available. So, I’m very thankful for the one that we’re getting from Working on Fire.”
