Kleinfontein community accuses Tshwane of targeting it for removal

The Kleinfontein informal settlement, a self-declared Afrikaner-only community east of Pretoria, has accused the City of Tshwane of targeting it for removal.

This follows the city’s urgent legal bid to halt all development on the land.

The metro argues its action is based on long-standing legal issues dating back to 2013, while the community claims it is a politically and culturally motivated move against Afrikaners.

The City’s Human Settlements MMC Aaron Maluleka says, “At the centre of the conflict is a contravention of development and we have raised this on a number of occasions that there’s no issues of race or targeting Afrikaners. We are enforcing our bylaws led with management scheme and Spatial Planning and Land Use Management Act (Spluma) with regards to development that is currently taking place in Kleinfontein.”

Malukela says, “We have put together our papers with regard to what the court has said because the judge would look at us as if we are irresponsible as a local authority to deal with contraventions that are in Kleinfontein.”
