The Kimberley Regional Court sentenced 22-year-old Lebogang van Wyk on Friday for 15 years.
A man who raped a woman behind the Correctional Services centre in Kimberley in the Northern Cape has started to serve a 15-year jail term.
The Kimberley Regional Court sentenced the 22-year-old Lebogang van Wyk on Friday. He had been found guilty of rape and robbery.
Van Wyk had raped a 20-year-old woman and robbed her of her handbag and cell phone in August 2020. Provincial police spokesperson, Molefi Shemane says the man was arrested in January 2021.
“Bail was successfully opposed, and he remained in custody until the finalisation of the case. On Thursday, 30 October 2025, The Kimberley Regional Court convicted and sentenced Lebogang Joseph Van Wyk (22) as follows: Count 1: Rape – life imprisonment. Count 2: Common robbery – 15 years imprisonment. The accused was further declared unfit to posses a firearm, and his name will be entered into the National register for sex offenders.”
