Kimberley landlords accuse NSFAS of non-payment

Some frustrated landlords in Kimberley in the Northern Cape are accusing Sol Plaatje University and NSFAS of victimisation and failing to honour their contractual agreements.

This follows failures by NSFAS to make payments towards accommodation for over 500 students housed by the affected landlords. Business owners who have not received payment for a year say they have lost trust in the fund and are calling for transparency.

“We have been affected a lot. We have downsized our workers from twenty workers to five workers. We have issues with the council, with the water and lights. We have a bill of close to a million rand that we need to pay every month and it is a problem paying it,” says one of the landlords, Mustafa Obaray.

He says they have been providing transport for the students and they can’t pay for it anymore.

“We don’t have buses that are running anymore because of this story that we can’t get money. The university and the people who can give us money are victimising us,” he adds. –  Reporting by Tebogo Msimanga.
