A Northern Cape woman has started serving her prison sentence for defrauding two municipalities of over R900 000 in 2021.
The Kimberley Specialized Commercial Crimes Court found Simangele Sangweni guilty of fraud, forgery and money laundering and sentenced them to 10 years in jail.
Sangweni submitted fraudulent invoices and change of banking details letters to Phokwane and Frances Baard District Municipality.
Hawks provincial spokesperson Tebogo Thebe says, “The 33-year-old Ms Simangele Sangweni and her company Multi Equipments (PTY) LTD were found guilty for fraud, or fraud, forgery and uttering as well as money laundering by the Kimberley Specialized Commercial Court. Multi Equipments (PTY) LTD was sentenced to pay a fine of R100 000, completely suspended, while accused number two Smangele Sangweni was sentenced to 10 years imprisonment.”
