Kidnapped Indian businessman rescued in Alexandra

Police have confirmed the rescue of an Indian businessman who was kidnapped a month ago.

The businessman was found in a shack in Alexandra township, Johannesburg, and has since been reunited with his family.

His rescue followed a police operation in which the alleged mastermind behind the kidnapping, known as “Dollarman,” was shot dead during a confrontation near the R21 in Kempton Park on Wednesday.

Police spokesperson Athlenda Mathe says the rescue took place shortly after midnight on Thursday.

“The businessman was rescued from Alexandra shortly after midnight on Thursday morning. His rescue follows a shooting in which the mastermind was shot and killed during a confrontation with police along the R21 in Kempton Park. Police had been tracing this particular suspect for quite some time,” says Mathe.

She adds that the suspect was wanted for several other kidnapping cases, and others of housebreaking, carjacking and possession of an unlicensed firearm.

“He was wanted for a number of kidnappings from cases in the country at these five. We know that he is on SERNIC, which is Mozambique’s Wanted Persons Database,” Mathe says.

According to police, from July 2021 to September 2025, more than 337 kidnappers have been arrested by the SAPS anti-kidnapping task team and more than 146 illegal firearms have been seized.
