KAWU opposes proposed firearm law changes

The Private Security Sector Union, Kungwini Amalgamated Workers Union (KAWU), has raised concerns that the proposed Firearms Control Amendment Bill could lead to increased crime and job losses in South Africa.

This follows the gazetting of draft amendments by Police Minister Senzo Mchunu aimed at tightening firearm regulations within the private security sector. The proposals include limiting the number and types of firearms that security personnel may use.

KAWU national coordinator Khumbulani Moyo says the proposed changes could negatively affect private security operations.

“They might lead to job losses and also job cuts. And also they might lead to an increase of crime because companies will not be able to have the necessary resources, especially to make sure that they fight crime and other ammicables such as the water cans—some issues that they use when there is public violence or there is public demonstration or if there is violence in some areas,” Moyo says.
