Kareedouw residents without running water for almost 10 years

Residents of Kareedouw in the KouKamma municipality in the Eastern Cape are crying foul about the poor service delivery from the municipality.

The residents say they have been without water for almost ten years and have to queue every day for water in water tanks provided by the municipality.

The fed-up residents are also concerned about the quality of water from the tanks, as sometimes the water comes out murky.

The municipality has blamed the lack of water in the area on aging infrastructure and vandalism.

Sophie Miggels, a resident of the small town, says she has been to the clinic several times and suspects the cause of her ill health is a result of the murky water from the tanks.

“We struggle with water every day, toilets are far from our houses. There is no running water, so we have to take dirty dishwater to use for toilet flushing. The water provided in the tanks is very dirty.  That’s why all our water bottles are yellow at the bottom…. We will get sick.”
