The R102 crash near Lotus Park at Isipingo south of Durban, January 29, 2026
The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Transport says a joint team of highly trained officers from various law enforcement agencies has been established to investigate the exact cause of a crash that claimed the lives of 11 people on R102 near Lotus Park at Isipingo south of Durban on Thursday morning.
It is alleged that the 11 people, including a child, were passengers of a taxi which collided with a container truck.
Department spokesperson Ndabezinhle Sibiya says several others have sustained critical to serious injuries.
“This accident has occurred after we recorded a historic 18% decrease in fatalities during the festive season. The MEC has extended his deepest condolences to the families of the victims. He has assigned a team from his office to locate the families of victims and he has indicated that we will do everything in our power to ensure that they receive the necessary support.”
Sibiya adds: “Witnesses alleged that the truck driver made a U-Turn, resulting in the head-on collision. It is for these reasons that the MEC has mandated the RTI team to work with the Durban Metro Police and SAPS as part of the investigation. We want to establish the cause of this accident. We will update the people of KZN as we move along.”
