The water challenges that Johannesburg residents are facing have prompted the closure of some guest houses and restaurants.
In Melville, businesses and locals haven’t had water for the past 27 days.
Since the beginning of the week, angry residents from a number of areas, including Westdene, Melville, Brixton, have been protesting about the lack of water.
One of them, Kobus Bothma, says the situation is dire.
“You cannot run a guest house without sanitation. We have a pharmacy here, some people are sick, vomiting, yes, some of them are closed and you cannot allow your guests to come because they cannot use the toilet or shower. That’s impossible.”

Residents have called on the City to come up with a concrete plan to address the current water crisis.
They have accused the city of poor water management.
“We don’t want empty talk, we want action. It’s not just people here. The people who are most affected in our suburb are our neighbours, people who cannot afford JoJo tanks. It feels ridiculous that we have been without water for 25 days, so I mean it’s unfortunate when we don’t have water and this is not for the first time; it’s all been throughout last year.”
