Johannesburg Mayor Dada Morero briefing media on the city’s water challenges, 15 September 2025.
Johannesburg Mayor Dada Morero says they are working around the clock to address widespread pipe leaks and illegal water connections in Johannesburg as part of urgent interventions to improve water supply in severely affected communities.
Morero was speaking during a media briefing in Johannesburg as several suburbs face an inconsistent water supply.
Last week, residents of Westbury and Coronationville embarked on protests following water supply challenges.
Morero says a team is working to clamp down on illegal water connections, which continue to burden the water system.
Morero maintains that the city is affected by bursting pipes, which furthers the loss of clean water; hence, they are focusing on pipe replacement.
“Bulk of our pipes is what we call asbestos, it’s not easy to repair. So, once it’s burst, it means we must replace it. We’re also doing a pressure valve replacement, which is a good program and it’s going to help us to manage demand and manage it better. So, we’re on top of the situation and our teams are working around the clock to ensure that there’s a proper water supply to our communities,” says Morero.
