Joburg Mayor confirms no increase in prepaid electricity charges

The Mayor of Johannesburg, Dada Morero, has confirmed that the R200 monthly electricity charge for prepaid customers will not be increased.

This surcharge, which was introduced in July last year, had been met with objections from customers.

Despite proposals in the City’s draft tariffs for the 2025-2026 financial year to increase the prepaid electricity charge to nearly R270 (excluding VAT),

Morero assured that the charge would remain unchanged.

The draft tariffs also propose an increase in electricity by 12.51%, water and sanitation by 13.9%, property rates by 4.6%, and waste removal by 6.6%.

Morero emphasized that there would be a public participation process before the final tariff increases are presented to the council.

Addressing the proposed tariff hikes, Morero says, “As it relates to electricity, it is basically a pass-on from what Eskom normally does, so there is no major increase in relation to that. The main increase will be in sewer, which is not so steep. We are focusing on investing in water and sewer infrastructure, which requires us to raise enough money to deal with backlogs.”

He added that the City had aimed to keep increases as low as possible.
