City of Joburg employee at an electrical meter
The City of Johannesburg has announced plans to remove its equipment, including meters, from properties of customers who are behind with their payments.
The City says a total of 144 000 customers have been flagged for persistent non-payment and owe close to R12 billion.
Despite not paying, these customers continue to receive services.
The disconnection drive is set to begin next month, focusing on 1 366 customers who owe the City a total of R1 billion.
Malope Ramagaga is the Acting Group Head of Revenue and Shared Services at the Metro.
“The total number of customers we’re talking about is 144 000 customers. So, we took the 1 366 that was up there on top. We are still going to go down until we finish the 144 000 customers that owe the City a total of R12 billion. And they are spread throughout the City of Johannesburg, businesses as well. We’ve got businesses, we’ve got large businesses in them, and we have some of the upstate estates, people that are living in those estates that have been targeted for this removal,” says Ramagaga.
