The City has denied that the decision to remove the banner was due to the upcoming G20 Leaders’ Summit.
The City of Johannesburg has moved to clarify what it terms misinformation surrounding the removal of a banner by civic group, Solidarity, put up along the M1 motorway.
The City says the banner was set up unlawfully and in contravention of the City’s by-laws.
The City has denied that the decision to remove the banner was due to the upcoming G20 Leaders’ Summit.
The City of Johannesburg says in terms of the 2009 Outdoor Advertising By-Laws, any party seeking to erect, install, or display an outdoor advertising sign on City-owned property must make an application and obtain formal approval from the City.
However, no such application was submitted in relation to the banner in question.
Solidarity approached the High Court seeking the banner’s reinstatement, but has since withdrawn the matter.
The City of Joburg says it has offered to return the banner to Solidarity on condition that it is not reinstalled anywhere in the City until Solidarity complies with the applicable by-laws. – Reporting by Khensani Chauke.
