The Johannesburg Emergency Services says it has activated its disaster management teams in all seven regions of the city. This is as the South African Weather Service issues a warning for heavy rain, severe thunderstorms and strong winds in Gauteng.
On Thursday, heavy rains in many areas resulted in localised flooding.
“We’re happy to report that so far we have not yet recorded any major incidences, however, in most of our river streams which is Klip Valley, the stream which is cutting across and around Soweto and surrounding areas and also Jukskei – we have seen that the water levels are much higher. So, we’ve got our monitoring teams in those areas, to ensure that if we have to move residents in those areas, we will be able to alert them to do so. We are still pleading with our residents to avoid crossing river streams and also our motorists to continue to exercise caution,” says Joburg EMS Spokesperson Robert Mulaudzi.

Expect cloudy and cool conditions in the east, with scattered showers and thundershowers developing over central and eastern areas. It’ll be partly cloudy and warm elsewhere, but keep an eye out for possible severe storms in the North West, Gauteng, Mpumalanga, and the Free State pic.twitter.com/a4avHM5tqR
