JMPD warns against alcohol consumption at its parks and public spaces

The Johannesburg Metro Police Department says no person may consume, brew, store or sell any alcohol at city-owned parks or public open spaces.

During this time of the year many people visit city owned parks and consume alcohol. This also happen during holidays like the Day of Goodwill which will be celebrated tomorrow – 26th of December – where people relax in parks with families and have braais and consume alcohol.

Joburg Metro Police Spokesperson Xolani Fihla says JMPD officers have intensified visibility, law enforcement and patrols to curb drunk driving and will also monitor hotspots and entertainment hubs.

“The City of Johannesburg has a zero tolerance policy regarding alcohol in public open spaces. JMPD officers and Park Rangers are authorised to confiscate any alcohol found in these areas. Transgressors can face a fine starting from R500 under the Municipal By-Laws and in case of public disturbance or non-compliance, potential arrests. The only exception is for specific events that have applied for and have been granted temporary liquor license and a formal event permit from the city,” says Fihla.

Meanwhile, the Free State Department of Health has cautioned against prioritising alcohol over health this festive season.

Health MEC Monyatso Mahlatsi says while the festive season brings excitement, it can also pose serious health risks, especially for people living with chronic conditions or those who rely on daily medication.

Mahlatsi says late nights, long-distance travelling, disrupted routines often cause people to forget or delay taking their medication.

He says missing a few doses can undo months of treatment progress and lead to dangerous complications.
