JMPD to probe claims of drug syndicate infiltration

Former Johannesburg Metro Police Department(JMPD) police chief and current advisor to the MMC for Public Safety in the City of Johannesburg, David Tembe, says the department will look into allegations that a drug syndicate operating in Gauteng has infiltrated the judiciary, SAPS and the Metro Police.

These claims were made by KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner, General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi this past Sunday.

Tembe, who was speaking in Midrand during a crime prevention operation where drugs and illicit alcohol and cigarettes were recovered, says the investigation will also look into the disappearance of firearms belonging to law enforcement officials.

“I don’t know what about the metro police, because he said Gauteng metros. So, when you say Gauteng metros, there are only three metros in Gauteng. So, we’re going to have a look and see what is that, especially where it comes to the firearm that get lost, the firearm that there was a case especially in JMPD, what is happening with those firearms; whether they are involved in cash-in-transit heists or home invasions. So, we’re going to look at that, myself and the MMC and our team of management in the JMPD. We’re busy with that,” explains Tembe.

Meanwhile, Johannesburg Member of Mayoral Committee for Public Safety, Mgcini Tshwaku, has accused the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) of not securing enough prosecutions in relation to drug dealing in the country.

He says it makes the work of law enforcement officials harder to arrest criminals during raids, only for them to be released by the courts.

Tshwaku further questioned how the judiciary operates and emphasized that it should be investigated.

“We must check how many investigations and where are they. Someone must do an investigation. They must check, look at the trend and then all those who are involved in stolen cases, who are receiving bribes must be fired or must be arrested. So, we need to investigate; this guy was arrested, who’s the investigator, where’s the docket. Where on earth have you heard of that the docket has gone missing? By the way, that’s the reason why we don’t digitize and everything is still manual. Because if it’s manual, it’s still tamper proof. That’s why! Because docket are still written by hand. Docket must be (stored in computers). Why are we not digitizing? South Africa is not going to digitize because you can’t manipulate things, handwritten. No one is gonna go to the books and check. I mean in a digital age, there’s like software where you can put the things in,” says Tshwaku.
