Johannesburg municipal council Speaker Nobuhle Mthembu says more needs to be done to protect the lives of law enforcement officers.
This follows the murder of a Joburg Metro Police (JMPD) Officer Matome Mokoena, who was shot and killed on Wednesday, whilst responding to a robbery in Vlakfontein, east of Johannesburg.
Police are still searching for those responsible for his death.
In a statement, Mthembu says that Mokoena’s untimely death highlights once again the grave risks faced by law enforcement officers, who serve with courage and dedication to protect our communities.
She says that this incident brings to the fore the dangerous conditions under which law enforcement officers work.
Mthembu is calling on law enforcement agencies and the Justice System to act swiftly and decisively to ensure that justice is served for the Mokoena family.
