Seven South African Police Service officers have been arrested for alleged extortion and kidnapping by the Johannesburg Metro Police Department’s Tactical Reaction Unit.
The officers are accused of demanding money from an illegal miner found in possession of gold-refining material.
City of Johannesburg Public Safety MMC Mgcini Tshwaku says the JMPD officers apprehended the SAPS officers on the scene.
“The JMPD intervened, apprehending the officers on the scene. The zamazama’s are currently providing a statement to the authorities. The arrested officers are being detained at Booysen Police Station, where a case of extortion and kidnapping is being opened. The JPMD remains committed to upholding the rule of law, and corruption investigations are ongoing and further details will be provided as they become available.”
