Former NDPP Nomgcobo Jiba
Former acting National Director of Public Prosecutions (NDPP) Nomgcobo Jiba says there were serious concern inside the prosecuting authority by 2018, over the lack of progress in Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) related apartheid-era cases.
Testifying before the TRC Cases Inquiry in Johannesburg on Wednesday, Jiba says prosecutors are worried that suspects and witnesses are ageing, while victims’ families still had no justice.
She explains that concern led to calls for reports and intervention in stalled matters.
Jiba also told the inquiry she had no explanation for why progress on these priority crimes remained so poor over the years.
“What was of concern to us that time we are now sitting in 2018. We cannot report on any successful prosecution that we have made. That was a serious concern.”
