JHB Water working with law agencies to dismantle illegal connections

Johannesburg Water says it’s working with law enforcement agencies to disconnect illegal water connections in different areas of the city.

This as the city experiences severe water shortages, which the utility has partly attributed to illegal connections and ageing infrastructure.

The decision has sparked protests in communities.

In Westbury, Coronationville and surrounding areas, residents took to the streets yesterday over water shortages.

Johannesburg Water’s Operations Manager Logan Munsamy says disconnecting illegal water connections has saved them at least 25 million litres per day.

“Last week alone, we disconnected 12 hijacked buildings in the CBD. This week alone we disconnected eight hijacked buildings in the CBD. These are all buildings that have been taken over, invaded or left in a terrible state where there are leaks and bursts and wastage and there’s no accountability.”
