Car burglary
Police have identified the top hijacking hotspots across the most populated provinces for January to March of this year, with Ivory Park and Mamelodi East in Gauteng taking the first and second positions in the country respectively.
Mamelodi East recorded an 80 percent increase in the number of hijackings year on year jumping from 36 incidents in 2024 to 65 this year.
Gauteng accounts for four of the top five hijacking hotspots nationally with Akasia and Jabulani precincts occupying the fourth and fifth worst affected areas.
Umlazi in KwaZulu-Natal was the precinct with the third highest number of hijackings for the quarter.
Police Major Thulare Sekhukhune gives the national picture.
“Car hijackings has reduced by 805 and robberies for cash in transit, we had 35 compared to 40 we had in the comparable quarter leading to reduction of five counts and we had 99 truck hijackings,” adds Sekhukhune.
