The mayors of Johannesburg and Tshwane say all systems are in place for the Urban 20 Mayoral Assembly on Thursday.

The gathering brings together Mayors from around the world to discuss best practices and strategies for futuristic and climate-resistant cities.

Dada Morero and Nasiphi Moya briefed the media in Pretoria yesterday on their preparedness to host the U20 Assembly.

This year’s G20 Summit will take place in South Africa, which is the first African nation to host the event since it began over 25 years ago.

The city’s diplomacy initiative brings together mayors and delegates of cities from the G20 member countries.

The aim is to promote discussion and political articulation around recommendations that address economic, climate and development agendas in cities.

City of Johannesburg Mayor Dada Morero says, “Let this be Joburg’s call to the world that African cities matter and the time for resilience and future-ready urban cities is now. It will be a testament to how cities, including Johannesburg, are not just implementing global policy, they are shaping it.”

The U20 Assembly will be on Thursday and the Urban-20 Sherpa Meeting will be held over two days on Friday and Saturday.

Both gatherings will be at the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) International Convention Centre in Pretoria.

When asked about crime and urban decay in the two cities, City of Tshwane Mayor Nasiphi Moya says they are working on addressing challenges.

Moya says, “I need to assure you that we are a city that is improving in terms of public safety. What we do not want is to have a plan just for visitors and that plan does not work for residents. So generally, when it comes to visibility of TMPD (Tshwane Metro Police Department), our work with SAPS just to make sure that the city is safe that work is underway, but for the guests we are working closely with DIRCO to ensure that our guests are safe and are well taken care of.”

Moya says they will also use this as an opportunity to push other African cities.

She says, “We will hand over the inputs of African cities’ mayors and the reason that is important is that we want to make our submissions in a very constructive way, considering that not all African mayors are part of this.”
