IPID’s Thulani Magagula to resume testimony at Madlanga Commission

Police watchdog Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) Assistant Director, Thulani Magagula, is set to continue to testify before the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry when it resumes its hearings in Pretoria on Friday morning.

On Thursday, Magagula denied allegations that he deliberately delayed investigations into suspended Ekurhuleni Deputy Chief Julius Mkhwanazi’s conduct.

Mkhwanazi is accused of ties to alleged criminal cartel kingpin Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala.

The police watchdog’s senior investigator, Nomsa Masuku, also testified on Thursday, detailing the dangerous conditions she worked under when investigating the murder of Brakpan businessman Emmanuel Mbense.

Masuku testified about how her car was shot at while working on the Mbense case. She also testified about another investigation involving police officers.

She told the Commission that during that investigation, her son was also shot at but didn’t pass on. However, the shooting left him in a wheelchair.

Her son is now learning how to walk. Masuku’s testimony has also highlighted some of the dangerous working conditions that police investigators are subjected to during investigations.
