Former SAA Board member Yakhe Kwinana appears at the East London Magistrates Court in the Eastern Cape on 26 March 2025.
Another investigating officer, who testified in the bail application of former SAA Board Member Ntombiyakhe Kwinana, has detailed how they struggled to locate Kwinana when they wanted to question her.
Sergeant Motlalepule Ledimo, attached to the National Intervention Unit, tasked to investigate extortion-related matters, was testifying in the East London Magistrate’s Court in the Eastern Cape on Thursday.
He told the court that they had to apply for a warrant of arrest because she was not coming forward to meet the authorities.
Ledimo also testified that Kwinana was a flight risk. However, the defence disagreed, pointing out that she had handed herself over to police. Ledimo told the court that Kwinana had left for Pretoria, even though she knew that police were looking for her in East London.
“When she knew that the police were looking for her, she could have come, especially if she was around East London, but she decided to drive to Gauteng, that’s when I had to apply for a warrant. I took it as if she were running away from the police.”
Kwinana’s legal representatives were not pleased with the way the State is handling the matter, Lindelwa Mbanjwa is her instructing Attorney.
“We have said to the prosecutor that anytime he wants to produce a document he must first show it to us as the defence. The honourable court has indicated that he still doesn’t want to do it. He is leading his witness on a document that we have not seen.”
The matter continues on Friday.
