The inquest into the death of anti-apartheid activist and Nobel Peace Prize laureate, Chief Albert Luthuli will commence at the KwaZulu-Natal High Court in Pietermaritzburg on Monday.
This comes after the National Prosecuting Authority announced the re-opening of the inquests into the deaths of Luthuli and prominent human rights lawyer, Griffiths Mxenge.
Luthuli, who advocated for equal rights amongst all racial groups within South Africa, died on 21 July 1967.
Official reports at the time suggested that he died soon after being struck by a goods train near Gledhow station at Stanger, KwaZulu-Natal.
An inquest held in September 1967 found that there was no evidence which disclosed any criminal culpability on the part of any of the employees of the South African Railways or anyone else.
The family of Luthuli, who still seek answers on his death, state that this inquest marks a significant milestone in the pursuit of truth and justice.
