The National Commissioner of Correctional Services, Makgothi Thobakgale has condemned a violent stabbing incident at the Oudtshoorn Correctional Centre that has left one inmate dead and four officials injured.
He says inmates had resisted when officials searched their cells on Wednesday.
Thobakgale says contraband, including cellphones and narcotics, had been found.
He says that the same group of inmates launched an attack during unlock procedures the following day, stabbing officials.
Thobakgale says an inmate died from injuries sustained during the altercation.
“The offenders implicated in the stabbings have been placed in single cells pending disciplinary action. All the units at medium A had to be researched and that resulted in the confiscation of additional weapons. As a result, offender activities and visits have been suspended until further notice.”
