SABC broadcasting studio in the early 1900s.
In honour of the SABC News’ 75th Anniversary, we take a look at the memorable highlights of the organisation’s history since its first broadcast on 17 July 1950.
The first South African Broadcasting Corporation’s news radio bulletin went live from the Broadcast House on Commissioner Street in Johannesburg.
This was after the National Party (NP) took power in 1948 and began implementing its racial segregation policy of apartheid.
Since then, various changes in the political arena have been reflected at the SABC.
This began showing the enlightened views of some of the National Party leaders – known as the “verligtes” – who were advocating for reform.
Among them is the first ever live political debate that took place on South African television, which featured then South African State President, FW de Klerk and Conservative Party leader, Andries Treurnicht in 1988.
SABC News has accomplished various milestones in the past 75 years of being a credible broadcaster despite being highly censored during apartheid.
Below is a timeline of some of SABC News milestones over the years.
