An Eskom Open-Cycle Gas Turbine generator
1 minute
The latest data from Eskom shows that the power utility spent an estimated R208 million between 04 May (Sunday) and 10 May (Saturday) on diesel.
According to Eskom’s latest statement on Friday 9 May, the power utility has spent R2.43 billion on diesel fuel for their open cycle generators (OCGT) to generate 415.91 GWh since 1 April 2025, which amounts to an estimated cost of R5 842 per megawatt hour.
The 415.91 GWh of energy generated from expensive diesel fuel is more than double the 175.20 GWh generated in the same period last year, but Eskom expects their ongoing maintenance plans to dampen the costly use of OCGTs during the coming winter months.
