An industrial hemp plantation.
An industrial hemp plantation has been launched at Duvhuledza outside Thohoyandou, in Limpopo. The hemp will be cultivated on a 30-hectare farm.
The project is aimed at helping the small community eradicate unemployment.
Industrial hemp is used in the production of textiles, biofuel, and fibre.
Organic farmer, Mpho Makhado, says the climate is conducive for the growth of the plant.
“It’s a plant that can create industries because in one plant you can create more than 10 industries and when you talk about industries, that is a source of job creation, so which means it can create as many jobs as we can, that can cater from the nearby communities and other people from other areas, not specifically people that are from this community,” says Makhado.
“When we talk about hemp, one of the key industries is energy source hemp. You can do biofuel with hemp and can create fibre that is used by the motor industries for their cars. Hemp can create textiles, hemp can create feeds. So, there are many things that can come out of this plant,” adds Makhado.
