Incidents like Bekkersdal shooting expose the crisis of violent crime: POPCRU

The Police and Prisons Civil Rights Union (POPCRU) has called on government to properly resource investigative and intelligence police units while also intensifying efforts to deal with organised crime networks.

This follows the mass shooting in Bekkersdal on the West Rand in Gauteng on Sunday, which claimed the lives of nine people.

The union says police alone will not be able to fight crime and has called on communities to also stand up against the violence plaguing the country.

POPCRU spokesperson Richard Mamabolo says these incidents expose the crisis of violent crime facing the poor class.

“This tragedy follows closely on another mistreatment earlier this month, once again exposing the deepening crisis of violent crime confronting our communities and the working class, poor in particular. The random nature of the attack and the use of multiple firearms underline the organised and predatory character of violent crime networks operating within our communities. We further demand improved working conditions and better protective equipment for our members who place their lives on the line of risk daily to protect the public.”
