Inanda policing forum say they being targeted by criminals

The Inanda Community Policing Forum (CPFs) says the situation in the township remains dire as they are now being targeted by criminal gangs. One of the challenges they say is the lack of resources that’s left them vulnerable to criminal attacks.

Inanda, situated north of the city, is one of the largest townships in South Africa. It’s already regarded as one of the most dangerous areas in KwaZulu-Natal.

For the past two years, the area has recorded the highest cases of serious crimes, including murder and rape.

In the previous quarterly crime statistics, Inanda had the highest cases of murder reported in the country.

Locals have for years bemoaned the high crime rate. Whilst police and local community policing groups have been working together, CPFs say this has put their lives in danger.

“I don’t know why they go to the extent of killing us as well. That’s what they’re doing at the moment. They’re just shooting everybody, even us who are just there. Most of our colleagues have been shot and buried in just the past few weeks because of the high rate of crime taking place in Inanda,” says Inanda CPF Chairperson Mbongeni Phewa.

In January, five people suspected to be members of local crime gang were found dead in a sports field in Bhambayi settlement. Twelve community members were arrested and charged. Locals alleged they’ve been terrorized by members of a crime gang, known as the West gang.

Several members of the gang have been killed during shootouts with police and others arrested. Young people in the area believe unemployment is contributing to the high crime rate.

“We need programs, job opportunities are needed because the main cause of crime is the fact that most people are unemployed and have nothing to do. I believe that this would come to an end if programs were put in place to fight off crime,” a resident says.

CPFs have also appealed for more resources.

“Who are not supporting us at the present moment is the Department of Liaising and Committee, as well as the government. They are not bothered about what we say to them, as they tell us we don’t have resources for what we are doing. We are just risking our lives, not even getting a stipend. Whereas most of the structures in place are getting a stipend,” Phewa added.

The government has committed to assisting community crime fighting groups.
