Impendle Municipality admits to serious management failures

Impendle Local Municipality councillors have admitted there are serious failures in the running of the council and are calling for the provincial government to intervene.

The municipality is facing a financial crisis, with workers and councillors not being paid salaries for December and January.

CoGTA MEC Thulasizwe Buthelezi held a meeting with the municipality, where he slammed the councillors for failing to do their jobs.

Community projects have stalled, with about R43.5 million in unspent grant money, at risk of being returned to national government.

Acting Mayor Zibuse Dlamini says they would welcome an intervention in the form of an administrator.

“We want an informed decision; we couldn’t just go and suspend and fire the MM [municipal manager] until we have proved that he has done something major. What is happening here we are not happy about as councillors. We going to do consequence management based on evidence and based on informed information that we are going to get when we do our internal audits and then investigations.”
