The Johannesburg Metropolice K-9 unit and the Hawks have, during a raid, uncovered an illegal gold refinery operating in Booysens, Johannesburg.
The facility is believed to be a key processing hub for Zama Zama cartels.
This raid forms part of ongoing law enforcement efforts to disrupt the full value chain of illegal mining syndicates.
While it’s still unclear what the value of gold-bearing material is, authorities are currently on scene conducting a thorough search, collecting evidence and processing the site.
Law enforcement noted that further details, including arrests and seizure of assets, will be released as the investigation progresses.
The raid occurred amid a broader national campaign to combat illegal mining and related crimes called Operation Vala Umgodi.
