Suspended Police Minister Senzo Mchunu.
Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) President Velenkosini Hlabisa says the party welcomes the decision by President Cyril Ramaphosa to place Police Minister Senzo Mchunu on special leave.
Hlabisa was addressing members of the media in Durban on matters pertaining South Africa’s governance.
Ramaphosa’s decision follows allegations by KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi against Mchunu two weeks ago.
Mkhwanazi accused senior police officials and Mchunu of interfering with sensitive police investigations that include the disbandment of the KwaZulu-Natal political killings task team.
IFP President Velenkosini Hlabisa says: “The allegations made by Lt. General Mkhwanazi go to the heart of the matter and are of serious concern to the IFP. Hlabisa says it remains their priority to restore public trust in security and legal systems of the country.
Hlabisa further adds that the allegations made by Lieutenant-General Mkhwanazi go to the heart of the matter of serious concern to the IFP, which is political violence.
“We are seated here with a long list of unresolved cases of murder of political office bearers. We remain with no answers and families are without answers and families are without closure. Political interference and disruption, as alleged into the investigations of political killings requires a full-scale investigation. The allegations by Mkhwanazi have entrenched a trust deficit between the DSPS and the country which must be reversed through due process and thorough investigation,” says Hlabisa.
