IFP supports AmaZulu King Misuzulu’s call to rename KwaZulu-Natal

The Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) in the KwaZulu-Natal Legislature says it fully supports and applauds the call by AmaZulu King Misuzulu kaZwelithini to rename the KwaZulu-Natal Province to KwaZulu.

According to the IFP, this call is both timely and historically justified.

King Misuzulu is said to have made this call during the 147th edition of the Battle of Isandlwana, which was held in Nquthu in the north of the province last Thursday.

He is said to have announced that he would start a campaign to remove the name Natal.

IFP says it does not find anything sinister in the King’s proposal due to longstanding historical distortion.

IFP Chief Whip of the KZN Legislature, Blessed Gwala says, “The demarcation resulted in the loss of many parts of KwaZulu, which were placed under other provinces. The IFP feels vindicated by His Majesty’s position. It is well documented that during the Convention for a Democratic South Africa (CODESA) negotiations in the early 1990s, there was intense debate over the renaming of provinces, particularly Natal.”

Gwala adds: “The IFP consistently and firmly advocated for the recognition of KwaZulu in acknowledgement of the Zulu Kingdom and its profound historical, cultural, and political significance. We further believe that His Majesty’s call opens the door to addressing other long-standing historical distortions.”
