IEC moves to de-register SACP and 91 other inactive parties

The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) has issued a notice to de-register the South African Communist Party (SACP) and 91 other inactive political parties.

The affected parties have until March 24, 2025 to submit reasons to the Commission explaining why they should not be removed from the register.

According to the IEC, these parties failed to meet their obligations by not confirming their continued existence.

This development follows the SACP’s recent announcement of its intention to contest the 2026 elections independently.

Currently, there are over 600 registered political parties in South Africa, with 383 registered nationally and 226 at provincial or municipal levels.
