The hung Thabazimbi Local Municipality is preparing to hold the first council meeting to elect officials on Thursday.
The day after the by-elections, the Constitutional Court upheld the legitimacy of the coalition led by the Democratic Alliance in the dissolved council. The by-elections, however, produced another hung council.
Limpopo Co-operative Governance MEC Basikopo Makamu says the sitting will proceed as planned.
“We are ready that we will be sitting on Thursday the 12th, we were thinking of Wednesday, unfortunately, the magistrate and IEC staff are not necessarily available and as a result, we will be convening the first sitting of Thabazimbi Local Municipality on Thursday.”
The Electoral Commission says it is ready to facilitate the first council sitting where the mayoral council will be elected.
“The IEC has been requested to assist with the first item on the agenda will then be to elect the speaker of the council, once the speaker is elected, that speaker will then take over the running of that agenda. The IEC will also be there to assist with the election of councillors who will represent Thabazimbi at the Waterberg District,” says provincial electoral officer Nkaro Mateta.
