The almost 400 suspended Ekurhuleni Metro Police officers have until this Friday to respond in writing to the pre-dismissal letters issued to them. The 389 officers were suspended for participating in an illegal strike where they blocked highways using state vehicles in March this year.
They were protesting over increased pay and improved working conditions.
The City’s Phakamile Mbengashe says the pre-dismissal process is to allow fair representations from the workers and as well as assessing each case on its merits and level of remorse demonstrated.
“The city also issued a strong warning against threats targeting officers (who) continue to report for duty, escalating these incidents to the SAPS and the Hawks for investigation. Mayor Xhakaza reaffirmed the city’s commitment to law enforcement, public safety and constructive dialogue within labour forums,” says Mbengashe.
