Human trafficking suspects expected to appear in court

Three suspects who are facing charges of human trafficking and the illegal possession of a firearm are expected to appear in the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court this morning.

Officers arrested the suspects last week after a tip-off that led them to a house in Sandringham in Johannesburg.

Twenty-six undocumented Ethiopian nationals were being held in the house.

Preliminary investigations by the joint team revealed that the victims broke and opened a window and burglar bar and escaped.

A few were located in the area close to the crime scene while others escaped.

Further investigations led to the arrest of three suspects, who were allegedly involved in human trafficking and illegal possession of a firearm.

The suspects were found with a pistol, one magazine, and no ammunition.

The matter was referred to the Gauteng Hawks’ Serious Organised Crime Investigation for further exploration, and the 26 undocumented individuals are currently being processed to determine their status as trafficking victims.
