Pre-school teacher Amber Lee Hughes has confessed to drowning her ex-boyfriend’s four-year-old daughter. Hughes appeared in the Johannesburg High Court facing two counts of rape and one count of murder.
She told the court through her lawyer that she was suffering from Borderline Personality Disorder at the time of the incident, but maintained she was fully aware of her actions.
Hughes was arrested in 2023 following the death of her ex-boyfriend’s daughter, who was found dead after drowning in a bathtub in the apartment she shared with the little girl’s father.
NPA spokesperson Phindi Mjonondwane says the case is postponed to August 7th for closing arguments on the admissions.
“We prayed to the court to reject Hughes’ version, citing that she was the only person with and around the child at the time of her death, that she has shown no remorse and failed to take responsibility for her actions. As the state, we are convinced that we have proven our case beyond any reasonable doubt, like placing evidence that in our view has passed the judicial master,” Mjonondwane says.
