Highgate Hotel massacre witness urges survivors to forgive

1 minute

One of the witnesses testifying at the Highgate Hotel Massacre inquest has told the Special Tribunal in East London that she has forgiven the perpetrators and called on the survivors to do the same. She believes this will enable them to get closure and move on with life.

Bernice Whitfield lost her husband Derrick during the tragedy. He was shot and wounded five times in the attack which claimed five lives in May 1993 and left several others seriously wounded.

She believes the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) was a waste of time as they never got the answers they wanted in connection with the attack.

“I have forgiven the perpetrators. So all I’m saying to my fellow survivors, forgive them and be set free. God knows who they are, a lie cannot be hidden. There is nothing hidden from God it will be exposed and that is my hope.”
