Higher Education urged to plan admission of rural matriculants to institutions

Traditional Leaders Organisation, Contralesa has called upon the Department of Higher Education to plan ahead for student admission to avoid frustrating deserving students who have passed their matric especially those who are from rural areas.

Contralesa President Kgosi Mathupa Mokoena says there are many students who have passed their matric but have not yet been admitted.

Mokoena says this will demotivate the learners who are still in lower grades especially those who are in rural areas and disadvantage communities.

“Contralesa is concerned that there are many students especially from rural areas who passed their grade 12 with flying colors but unfortunately they were not admitted in those tertiary institutions to further their studies, many of these learners will be idling, roaming the streets doing nothing. This is not motivating to learners who are still in lower grades.”

Mokoena adds, “Teachers and learners are doing so much to get better results. The department is aware as to how many grade 12 learners will be sitting for examination at the end of each year, unfortunately there is no plan for it. Contralesa calls upon the department to start planning properly so that we do not frustrate these poor students after they have done so much.”
